Wow, Alex. That is a big question. There are many things we can 'say' to parents in those initial sessions, but I have found that listening is the number one priority. (Admittedly, this has been a learned behavior for me because I always have to remind myself to stop talking so much!) It is through listening that we can get to the heart of what is really 'worrying' parents about stuttering. Through reflecting and helping them analyze their own fears that we can help them align their perceptions with the facts of the disorder and the realities of what their children can accomplish; whether or not they stutter! The road of 'acceptance' (which takes various forms for everyone) is not a straight path, but it starts with being listened to and validated!
