Great question.. and great for your professor to remind you to not get wrapped up in theory! :) Parents DO ask 'why.' But the inherent implication is usually 'did we do or not do something to make this happen?" Guilt and fear play pivotal roles in the process of learning to deal with stuttering in a family. I don't actually have an answer to "why." I try to allow parents to gain information through myself and resources, but then to process that information through their own filters of the experience. I am one of their resources and sometime guide, but I allow them their own journey. (Even though I often have to tell myself to STOP TALKING so much when I am working with parents :)) Hope this answers your question and thanks for participating!
