Enjoyed your question. For a person with a severe stutter there is usually no way to hide it but not to talk. A person who decides to keep their stutter covert (1) has the opportunity because the visible stuttering behaviors are usually relatively mild, and (2) is very fearful of how others will react to his speech difference. Like some people who torture themselves going swimming in cold water by entering the water agonizing step by step.. their "pain" lasts a long time. For those who just jump in, their "pain" is over much more quickly. The PWSC tries to avoid the "pain" of others finding out that he stutters. Often it is the anticipation of the reaction of others, rather than having actual experienced any reactions from others, that is enough to persuade the person to hide his stuttering.
