Perhaps I could have been a bit clearer in how I tried to express that thought as others have had the same comment. What I was attempting to say was that fears of stuttering and the reactions of others are strong enough for the PWS to decide not to risk stuttering; choosing instead to employ their repertoire of speaking strategies so as not to disclose their stutter. To summarize, the penalties connected with stuttering (real or anticipated) outweigh the possible rewards of doing so openly (of being who you really are), so the speaker decides to hide that fact that he stutters. [I'm happy to try to explain this point again! .. and again!]
