Many parents (and SLPs) define "getting better" as reduction of disfluency. One journalist who stutters who emerged from the closet after "The King's Speech" wrote that he learned to be covert in therapy, and I suspect this happens more than we may realize. And some of the folks I have known in support groups reported that their families thought the support group was making their stuttering worse because they began stuttering more openly.
