Gary, your article addresses a topic that I believe does not get adequate attention. The most severe stutterer that I have ever seen, one whose life was completely dominated by the fear of exposure, never stuttered once in my office. The story told by this person was absolutely incredible. When I encouraged this person to read without avoiding, s/he unexpectedly screamed at me, jumped up and stormed out of my office, never to be seen by me again. The mere thought of even attempting feared words was so frightening that any opportunity for discussion was terminated. I often wonder what ever happened to this person.
