In the graduate level fluency course that I am currently taking, we have discussed the importance of the clinician in the therapeutic process while working with a PWS/PWSC. My professor also provided the iceberg analogy and discussed the 90% portion relating to fear, anxiety, embarrassment, denial, and isolation hidden below the surface of the water. Our society seems to view stuttering only as the 10% above the water and never takes the time to acknowledge the emotions that a PWS/PWSC feels on a daily basis. The negative reactions of those in the community towards stuttering are upsetting and I can completely understand the reasons why a person would choose to stutter covertly. As a future clinician, the trusting relationship that I will strive to build with a PWS/PWSC will serve as a basis to begin to discuss the emotions that have been associated with their overt/covert stuttering. I value the analogies you have provided in this paper because they both reflect the importance of the internal struggles related to stuttering.
