Sounds like you'll make an exceptional therapist Alyssa! In my experience, among the important things to keep in mind to encourage a client to talk is to ask more questions than making statements, and don't make judgments about what the person says -- just accept what they tell you as being a reality of their lives. I also am reluctant to try to relate to clients by attempting to tell them that I've had similar experiences (even though I myself stutter). After all, it's about the client; not me. Best of luck.
