This is usually a very personal decision; a choice the individual makes purposefully. For the PWSC, the penalty of others finding out about their stuttering is far greater than all of the work entailed in hiding it... so its usually a very "touchy" subject and not easily broached. As I suggested in another post, I might approach the topic indirectly, like talking about what I learned about stuttering from watching the movie "The King's Speech" and asking the other person's opinion. This might offer the other person the opportunity to bring up the topic of their own stuttering (but its probably more likely that they still wouldn't!) From the movie, I might continue talking about how speech therapy has changed sense then and that there are support groups available now that weren't around back then. Again, its usually a sensitive issue, so you need to decide if trying to help the person is worth the risk of offending them. Best of luck.
