Gary - thanks for the response. I have a problem with the usage 'a covert form of stuttering.' I understand that some people suffer from the speech pathology of stuttering but don't express the overt behaviors in most situations. But I take issue with the idea that stutter mild enough to be under sufficient voluntary control to hide the condition is necessarily a 'form' of stuttering. Stutter is a speech pathology, and 'covert' stutterers have got it. They may need a different emphasis in their therapy, but stutter is stutter. I'm also concerned that the emphasis on subjective experience is telling 'covert' stutterers that they are somehow different from other stutterers. It seems to me that the main message covert stutterers need to hear is that they are 'not' different from 'overt' stutterers. They suffer from a speech pathology, and they need speech therapy to improve their condition. Take-home message: the speech pathology causes the anxiety - the anxiety doesn't cause the speech pathology. Telling covert stutterers that they suffer from a phobia just misdirects them from their fundamental problem.
