Hi Gary, Thank you for a most enlightening paper. When we attempt to conceal the fact that we stutter, we may not OPENLY display our dysfluencies, but I certainly feel that we stutter on the INSIDE. In my case, I found that constant circumlocution and word substitution was so exhausting and, invariably, created a state of inner turmoil. When I adopted a policy of greater openness, it had a hugely desensitizing effect. I discovered that an enormous weight was lifted off my shoulders. Not only that, I derived immense satisfaction from saying the words of my choice. Avoidance is now a thing of the past. However, I fully acknowledge that we are all different and will wish to tread our own paths in life. We should respect the right of everyone to make whatever choice they consider appropriate to their individual circumstances. Kindest regards Alan
