This article offered a very fresh perspective of covert stuttering. In classes, we focus so much on stuttering-like dysfluencies and modifying stuttering behaviors and secondary characteristics, etc., but it's rare to talk about a person who may stutter covertly. The way you described covert stuttering almost seems like the same way I feel about my acne. I wear a lot of foundation every day, and I have a genuine dislike and fear of having my picture taken because of it. The makeup I wear seems similar to the fluency a covert stutterer has; it's fluent(just like make-up makes my skin look clear), but all the anxiety about stuttering is there (Just like I still know I have acne, and I avoid situations because of it). Now that I have a better view of covert stuttering, I think I will have a good place to start in counseling people who come to me for help.
