Attending group therapy (or a support group for that matter) is a huge step as the person is acknowledging their stuttering instead of hiding it. Group therapy is a place to educate the client about their stuttering and for them to find companionship among others in the "same boat". So an initial step is learning that your aren't the only one who feels like this; and then it is often inspirational/motivational to hear the steps that others have taken to work through their stuttering. Group therapy is usually led by an SLP, so the issues raised in group are targeted to the needs of the group members. Issues to be addressed might include facts about stuttering, communicating feelings about stuttering, and practice using speech therapy techniques for stuttering.
