I'd venture to say that the most common threads among PWSC were a strong negative reaction to their stuttering, feeling that they didn't want others to know about their speech difference, and the capability to hide it (the stuttering was mild enough so they had the option). I haven't noted age or gender to be differentiating factors. In terms of recognizing covert stuttering... usually there is something different in how the PWSC talks.... there's often a rapid rate, sort of an interrupted flow of speech (from switching words and incomplete sentences), often abrupt starts to utterances, and sometimes poor eye contact -- all of which are done voluntarily. There is usually something "different" about their speech that you wouldn't identify as stuttering, but listeners often just "can't put their fingers on it." When there are disfluencies, they are usually brief and tend to be glossed over in a slightly embarrassed way. Hope that helps.
