Heather... each client works at their own pace in terms of overcoming the issues of their past stuttering. I'm not sure that they are ever completely "erased", but most clients at least learn to cope more effectively with their feelings. After client's begin to open up a little, most often in therapy a client's emotional concerns are addressed concurrently with the speech aspects of their stuttering. Because the issues are inter-related, progress in one domain usually spurs progress in the other. For example, learning to control stuttering makes the client less anxious about it. Conversely, stuttering more openly (not trying to hide it) results in less anxiety and muscle tension, which results in less stuttering.
