Now we're getting into the reason I'm concerned about the term 'covert stuttering.' By giving it a name, you suggest to people that it's a fundamentally different phenomenon. As far as I know, what is called covert stuttering is simply a case of stuttering that is sufficiently mild that it's behavior and expression can be supressed from outside observers. Even severe stutterers do the same thing all the time during their speech. I would suggest that although there are covert stutterers, there is no covert stuttering. There is one condition, with a range of expression. Some people live with cancerous tumors for many years, and others die in a year in spite of aggressive medical treatment. But it's all cancer.
