PWSC usually identify themselves and come to the clinic for help. They are often missed in the schools because they have so few outward symptoms. But as the person ages, the burden of hiding their stuttering, and the perception that they perhaps compete with with others verbally, often brings them to SLPs for help. In the assessment, the majority of the information is gathered about the handicapping effects, their thoughts and beliefs and the strategies (avoidances) they use to conceal their problem.
