Some things we do in therapy is to have the client stutter on purpose; these aren't really stuttering blocks or repetitions, they are just done intentionally to reduce fears of stuttering. The client choose to tell one person about his stuttering or wear a tshirt referencing stuttering (a favorite tshirt slogan -- What people who stutter say is worth repeating!) or talk to someone about the movie The King's Speech... activities that break down the barriers the client has erected regarding stuttering. Reducing the fear is a process and takes quite a while. Along the way, stuttering begins to emerge and gives the SLP another dimension of the problem to work on.
