Gary, I am sure your reputation as a highly skilled clinician is well deserved. However would you not agree that, as with the covert stuttering you described, there can also be overt stuttering associated with shame, guilt, anxiety isolation, hopelessness etc? Also would you agree that not all people who stutter either overtly or covertly have significant associated psychosocial pathology? In fact CBT for pws is obviously aimed at eliminating these issues and is regarded as succesful therapy even if stuttering (whether overt or covert) remains. Do you therefore agree then that more specific definitions are needed?
