When any person who stutters comes to therapy, there is a reason; some particular event or happening in their life that motivated them to seek help now, instead of continuing to put it off or giving up hope that it could be bettered. That is a good starting point to motivate the client and I try to explain each segment of therapy in terms of how it will help the client get past his/her fears and free themselves of stuttering. There's not a single motivating factor for all who stutter, so you need to determine each individual client's motivation. To my surprise, I've often found the becoming a fluent speaker isn't enough of a motivating factor; so you'll likely to look shorter term to find an answer to what will motivate the client.
