We don't have reliable statistics on the prevalence of covert stuttering, because PWSC aren't willing to "raise their hands" and be counted. Usually the way PWSC speak is "different" than fluent speakers. The anxiety about speaking (and being discovered) often results in a faster speaking rate. Sometimes the words that are substituted for those the PWSC 'can't say' seem awkward or confusing. The sentence structure of utterances are sometimes like mazes, or there is an inordinate number of incomplete sentences. In all, these are subtle things and it doesn't dawn on listeners that this speak is a result of trying to hide stuttering.
