Sarah, Thank you for this paper. I read about analogies being made between learning any other motor behavior and learning easier speech. I tell my students who stutter that the speech hierarchy is sort of like the step-by-step process of learning to play a sport - by focusing on an "inner game" or otherwise. Yet, now it seems I am not appreciating the depth of the issue and may be setting my clients up for feelings of failure when his/her experience is actually not at all like learning to play tennis. What should I tell children who stutter when I am encouraging them to do some form of speech practice? Judy, SLP
