Dr. Smits-Bandstra, This article was extremely informative, and as a new graduate student clinician I sometimes find myself feeling very puzzled by the complexity of stuttering. A client I am currently working with has a very mild stutter. The stutter is only intermittent, therefore, I feel it is important for me to give him a form of a maintainence plan that he can use when he feels himself becoming disfluent. When I read the part of your article that noted massed practice schedules are not as effective for long-term generalization, I wondered if it would be logical to use a type of maintenance therapy with my client. For example, maybe if he had exercises to practice at home, just five or ten minutes a day, it would feel like second nature for him to utilize this technique in everyday life when he was becoming disfluent. Thank you for your time and the useful information!
