Lydia, I think I always felt like my SLP’s cared about me, even in public school when the therapy provided was useless, I think people cared. It wasn’t until much later that I felt like I knew anyone who understood. Understanding and caring are different. The question that seems to follow is, so how can someone understand something they have never experienced? And this I do not know how to do. But I do know that some precious people who have never stuttered, many of whom are part of this conference, have found a way to gain understanding. I can only speculate that is by caring and experience. Be honest and authentic, understand that you don’t understand, but validate that your client’s experiences are real. Good luck with your studies and clinical work. Best Regards, ~Reuben
