Hi Ed, As a graduate student who will be a SLP, people like yourself are a tremendously valuable resource! I know that many SLPs, including myself, want to meet your needs and work with you towards your goals. In that light, I'd like to ask what you mean by "therapeutic tools." What specifically, have you experienced? It's true that the academic setting of graduate school can at times be heavily focused on the science and less on the individual. Dr. Shapiro has done a lot of good work reminding clinicians and future clinicians that the science must be applied to the INDIVIDUAL, with that individual's struggles, accomplishments, and goals always in mind. Stuttering is not a stuffy nose, in that clinicians cannot and certainly should not have a prescriptive, linear approach to therapy. Trust that there are clinicians out there who want to have the "therapeutic tools" and respect you as a unique, capable individual. You can help that become a more prevalent reality, right here right now. Tell us your story and experiences as you see fit so that I may learn from you!
