Thank you, Dr. Shapiro, for such a beautiful and clearly expressed essay pointing to the more universal themes that should underlie stuttering therapy. I suspect that the ability to do “big picture thinking” comes from a depth of knowledge and comfort with a subject matter. As therapists I feel that often we are not as comfortable with the less structured aspects of stuttering therapy. We feel safer with more concrete techniques than the seemingly more ‘psychological’ self-analysis aspects of thoughts and feelings that are involved with effective treatment. Thank you for your call to dig deeper. As we facilitate our client’s journey towards communication freedom, I was wondering about specific techniques that you have used to help generate that freedom. Is this obtained by discussions within the therapy room or fluency alone, or do you address the bigger picture by incorporating topics other than disfluency to help generate that change? If so, what type of resources have you used or encouraged the patient to look into in the past? Thank you.
