Dr. Shapiro, what an inspiring message this was. Before beginning Grad School, I worked as a speech therapist with several preschoolers who stuttered. I am ashamed to say that I almost "dreaded" being assigned a fluency case for the simple reason that I was scared and felt like I did not know how to help. Watching children ages 4 and 5 stutter was often heartbreaking. Counseling the parents and answering their questions were also very difficult. The majority of my therapy sessions were spent modeling slow, clear speech with easy onsets. I had also encouraged the children to tell me "stop" when I demonstrate stuttering. I have heard mixed opinions on the phrase "take a deep breath"... and wanted to get your input on this. Have you worked much with preschoolers who stutter? If so, what have you found to be the most beneficial therapy method? Thank you so much!
