Dr. Shapiro, I thoroughly enjoyed your insight and hopes you shared in your article. I am a graduate student who is about to go out on my externship. During my graduate clinical practicum, I worked with an adult who stuttered. I felt most of my sessions involved counseling him about how debilitating his stuttering was in his eyes. He had not yet achieved his dreams in life due to his stuttering. Your comment that made me think was, "I wish for you to realize that stuttering does not need to define who you are". As a student about to join the professional world, what advice can you give when counseling individuals who have not chosen to achieve the goals they have set for themselves due to their stuttering? Thank you.
