Hi Anica – what a great name, You are right – There is no replacement for internal motivation. Such motivation can lead to significant achievement yielding no greater personal sense of accomplishment or feeling of reward. You will discover that there are things a clinician can do to heighten a client’s and family’s sense of self-motivation. Constructing opportunities for them to experience success on a regular basis is at the top of the list. Success begets success. Much of my treatment is designed with this purpose in mind. Treatment also is designed to be collaborative (doing with, rather than for, others) and fun (resulting in personal satisfaction and genuine joy for being together, engaging in constructive dreaming, and treasuring what is being accomplished by growing and learning together). Within treatment such as this, real laughter is not uncommon and success is regular and ongoing. You’re entering a fascinating field. Embrace it and work really hard to do your best. Don’t let up. The clients and families you will meet are counting on you. Good luck. David Shapiro
