Erica, A pull out is a technique that is intended to help the person once they are stuck, say, in a block. It basically involves releasing the tension that is occurring in the a moment of stuttering, so that the person ends up 'pulling out' of the stutter. If, for example, I were stuttering on the "p" sound in the word "paper", I would do this by releasing the tension of my lips pressing together in a tense way, so the rest of the word is produced under greater control and with less tension. Charles Van Riper describes this in his book, and it is described in most basic textbooks about stuttering. Best regards, Lynne
