Anica, I appreciate your comments. Regarding how the interviewees respond, most are very positive toward the children. We are doing this activity on a college campus, where most people are aware that we have a campus speech & language clinic, and that children who are on campus are likely to be there for clinic. So, I think this makes for a bit of an ideal situation. We typically begin by having children survey students, staff and faculty in our department, and then go farther afield. The kids know that everyone in our department understands speech concerns, so that is typically lower on the stress-o-meter for them than going up to 'real' strangers (people who don't have anything to do with our clinic). That being said, these kids are truly taking on a challenge, and we are very appreciative that the community responds so well to the children. There will not necessarily be such a uniformly receptive audience everywhere that one might do a survey activity. When that is the case, preparing the child by talking about different types of reactions and helping them work out how they will respond, for example, if someone says they'd rather not take a survey, is important.
