Dear Lindsay, happy to meet you! With your interest in the mind-body connection, perhaps, you have discovered that more and more psychotherapists and other professionals, such as physicians, are practicing meditation to help them be more attentive to and empathetic toward their clients/patients. In fact, Dr. Daniel Siegel, originator of the process of "mindsight," published a book this year based on what he has been teaching these professionals. The accessible book entitled, "The Mindful Therapist," is based on the premise, well-articulated by the respected mindfulness meditation teacher and clinical psychologist Jack Kornfield in his video, "The Inner Art of Meditation" released in 1996 and now availabe as an audio CD under the title, "Meditation for Beginners," that who we are in the world is more important than anything we may do. >>> As you noticed, there are many ways to practice mindfulness, and Jon Kabat-Zinn has introduced many of them in his monumental book, "Coming to Our Senses. Healing Ourselves and the World through Mindfulness." Probably, the two most commonly adopted are mindfulness, sometimes equated with insight, and Zen meditation, the latter being more austere, in my opinion. >>> I have found that one's practice, even though consistent in fundamental aspects, can and will change over time in its outward features. The important thing is to practice! Reading about meditating and talking about meditating is not meditating. >>> So, thank-you, Lindsay, for coming forward to comment on the practice of meditation. Best wishes with your studies and professional practice. Ellen-Marie Silverman
