Jennifer, I explain the rationale for not using behaviors such as fillers, even to young school-age clients. I might first get them to identify it in their own speech, and once they can, I would challenge them to "go for the sound of the word", and make some noise!! Because if they begin to get on the sound of the word they want to say, ins tread of the filler, it WILL be noisy. When they understand that it is good noise, even though they are not used to it, and need to tolerate and desensitize to it, in the end... it will lead to more comfortable speech.
