October 16, 2011 Hello. My name is Lori R-B and I am a first year graduate student at the University of Redlands in Redlands, California. In your article, you noted a comparison of 61.3% (parents) vs. 91.2% (teens) noting stuttering interfering w/ their child’s school, 58% (parents) vs. 80.4% (teens) for stuttering interfering in family/social life, 67.9% (parent) vs. 85.2% (teens) child avoids speaking situation, etc.... I am wondering if you could tell me please how the “teens feel/felt” about their parents being so oblivious/uninformed about their teenagers’ actual feelings. Was there a survey for that? Additionally, how do they feel about their parents not participating in therapy and/or not following through with therapeutic activities outside of their “formal” therapy? Is there a reason “why” parents don’t become more proactive for their children? I am struggling to understand how parents could “not be aware” of educational and social issues since it is often obvious in these students grades or attitudes regarding school. Please understand that I am basing my “assumptions” on experience with my own children, an older son who stuttered due to medication when he was in middle school and my younger son has ADHD. Teachers did/do not hesitate to inform me about my son(s) behavior or speaking (either too little or too much respectively) issues. Do you have any survey information on my inquiries above? I appreciate your time, thank you.
