Hello! I found this research to be interesting for school-aged children; particularly the trends with parent involvement. It is great to see that parents are attending conferences and attaining education regarding their child's stutter. However, it appeared that fewer parents utilized strategies provided to them to work on at home, and even less worked on speech homework. These are the actions that would directly impact a child's fluency! I see that the question of how to involve the parents has been asked many times. An additional challenge I foresee based on the survey results is getting the parents to utilize the techniques and participate in speech homework outside of therapy once you finally get them involved. The parents are the REAL facilitators of fluency, especially in young children, because they are communicating with them much more often than SLP's. In fact, their involvement outside of therapy is what helps facilitate carryover. Time seems to be a huge factor in whether or not parents use fluency techniques outside of therapy. Therefore, my question is do you have any suggestions/recommendations for SLP’s about TYPES of fluency activities parents can use at home that don’t require taking EXTRA time out of the day? Teachers are also facilitators of fluency outside of therapy. However, in a large class it may be difficult to address just one child. What time saving facilitation tips can we provide teachers who have students with a stutter?
