Suzie, your questions raise some important considerations. First, to the point if my family was supportive. Because I tried so hard to hide my stutter, I think my family tried to hide it with me. It was the elephant in the room that no one wanted to talk about. My early attempts at therapy were half-hearted at best. I was just twisting in the wind. Looking back, I blame myself for not being more aggressive and more open about my stutter. Unfortunately, my roots are Southern and there is a mentality sometimes that if we don't talk about it, then it doesn't exist. I don't blame my family or friends. It was up to me to make the move. As to teachers, I went to a small private school where I was probably coddled a little more than perhaps would have happened in a larger public school. I was given leeway on my assignments. For instance, if we had to memorize and recite in class, I was allowed to write instead of recite. I see now that this was a terrible mistake, but I was all about survival in my teen years. Rod Stewart sings a song with these lyrics: "I wish I knew then what I know now, when I was younger." Oh, so true. Good luck on your journey.
