Thanks, Jen. You are correct in saying that age and experience are the two prime factors in gaining confidence against a stutter. That's why I think it's so important for the clinician to work with a client holistically. A stutter invades a person's psyche down to the bare soul. The breakthrough for me was the cathartic moment when I first felt a little fluency at age 39. At that moment I felt I was "normal," but I just happened to have a stutter. There was a casting off of chains which I will never forget. Accepting my stutter gave me the freedom not to stutter. That's a difficult concept to grasp, much like the phrase "a stutter is what you do when you try not to stutter." In my mind, those baffling statements hold all the answers.
