Hi Rebecca. Thanks so much for writing. I'm not sure if this is going to exactly answer your question, because you asked it as related to the past. I still stutter now, but I will answer it about the past. Growing up, I would avoid stuttering so didn't really let people hear it. I used to feel the stutters more in front of family, dominant uncles, some teachers, friends' parents, even some older friends. Sometimes even if I was tape recording myself when alone. I would try to speak quicker to avoid the stutters, which meant I stuttered more. But remember, I was using a lot of tricks so these people wouldn't hear the stuttering. I just felt the stuttering inside. Today, sounds which I still find hardest are l, m and s, and vowels. I usually feel a stutter coming about 2-3 words in advance. These days, I'm trying not to hide those stutters so much, but it is very very hard to let people hear them. When I stop the hiding though, speaking feels easier and less struggled. There's an excellent article on covert stuttering on the conference - I recommend you read that if you haven't already. I hope I answered your question.
