Hi Again, My parents were wise in instilling attitudes and behaviours to help me succeed in life as a blind person. They did not do so well at helping me live with stuttering, because they didn't talk about it or let me know it was ok to stutter. They are a product of their times and the advice given them by professionals then. Yes I have succeeded in life, but was never taught to relate well to my own stuttering. I just pretended it didn't exist and "got on with it" as they taught me. This certainly means I don't sit at home feeling sorry for myself. I am very grateful my parents had high expectations of me. It is certainly true that if kids who stutter receive messages of low expectation from their parents, they may not succeed. I agree that those parents need to change to help grow that positivity and can-do mentality in their children. Feel free to share this article with any parent also. I wish you well in your work.
