Hi Lisette - thank you for sharing your story. Again, it is interesting to me that some folks who stutter have not been tortured or tormented, while others have. It almost seems like the luck of the draw! But people are different, come from different experiences, and sometimes we are fortunate to meet people who take us for who we are, and aren't judgmental about some of our differences, and are flexible and tolerant. One of the posts suggested that others may be uncomfortable around PWS when the PWS seems uncomfortable. I wonder if this seems true for you. On your journey to be more accepting of your stuttering, and finding that speech is easier for you, do you find people more accepting, or not disturbed by your speech? Also, I know that growing up, when the adults didn’t talk about something (but I knew something was in the air) it was always really bad...too bad to talk about. If they didn’t talk about it, it wasn’t true! I always tell parents that not talking about it can be really harmful. It should be spoken about in a healthy, accepting atmosphere. That is the basis for the PWS being able to accept themselves, and not developing shame. I think that talking about speech, not using tricks to cover stuttering up, disclosure when comfortable and support groups all contribute to a really good feeling about self and increased self-esteem. As with any challenge, there is usually more than one aspect that needs implementation to get at a challenge completely, and it sounds like that is where you are. Your determination is going to take you to the place where you are the most comfortable. I like that you are working with an SLP who realizes your needs – isn’t SKYPE great?? Best of luck to you – Oh, I have not even commented on the fact that you are blind! It escapes me, as you are so proficient in your writing and communication – it never occurred to me – as I can’t see your blindness, just like I can’t see your speech!! You are an amazing individual! Thank you for writing.
