Megan, Good question. Some people might think that, because I couldn't see the odd looks I get from people when I stutter, it shouldn't bother me. But it does. I think as a child, I picked up on covert messages and emotions from people, even if I couldn't physically see their faces. Certainly, the verbal messages and the silence around stuttering contributed, but children are emotionally quite sensitive. There are other verbal clues - like people finishing off sentences, filling in the word, trying to hurry you along by saying "mm mm", getting distracted and looking away. You can pick that up by where their voice is coming from or if they are moving their body around etc. Good question.
