Shawna, Yes, I definitely think if my family had had better advice from professionals when I was younger, and had talked about stuttering in the same way as blindness, I would not have grown up with the shame I did. I knew they accepted blindness because it was just talked about, joked about - but stuttering never was except in a negative way (stop that, fix it). My parents didn't get the right support either in dealing with their understandable confusion and anxieties about stuttering. It was all the product of its time, and there's no blame involved anywhere.
