Thanks for your post, Amanda. It depends on the age of the child but, in general, parents should seek out a specialist. In the meantime, they should follow the do's & don'ts found on web sites such as the NSA, SFA, BSA, etc.: relax their speech by adding pauses, engage in turn-taking activities, focus on the content of the child's speech without giving advice on production, & don't interrupt or finish the child's sentences. Finally, parents will read & hear much advice on what to do, some of it good, some of it garbage. They should always check with the specialist before following it.
