I think that world-wide stuttering awareness is a lofty, yet attainable goal. Movies like The King’s Speech bring world-wide awareness in a short term way and we can only hope that they make a long term impact on the level of the individual. I think the way to begin increasing stuttering awareness is at the local level. However, I think that The King’s Speech can be a tool on the locally. I am a student at the graduate level and we have a movie theater in our university center. Our department can use the theater for a free showing of The King’s Speech and then hold a forum for questions. I don’t know if a similar program would be applicable in your community, but I believe it is something to consider. Several different events throughout the year to raise local awareness are in my opinion the best way to build awareness.
