I can’t say for sure. However, my guess is that when I returned to the United States old habits and cues kicked in – for example, if I had a history of stuttering a lot with a particular person or in a particular situation in my life here in the US, when I returned and found myself with those people or in those situations, long-standing feelings (which had been dormant during my time in Scotland) were stirred up that precipitated speech breakdown. I was not equipped to deal with the recurrence of stuttering and things spiraled downward.
