Hi Dale, Despite my advancing age, I clearly recall that we corresponded in the past. :-) Avoidance crept (insidiously) into my life and contributed immensely to my stuttering for so many years. I didn’t realise that every time I avoided a word (letter, sound or situation), the fear level increased. By (unwittingly) fuelling the fear, I was increasing its influence over my life. When someone explained the implications of avoidance (in 2000), I immediately made a pact with myself that I would never again resort to such a strategy. I adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards all kinds of avoidance. During the past 12 years, I have not once succumbed to temptation. Today, there are no words/letters/sounds that hold an emotional charge. It is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO liberating. Over the past 11 (or so) years, I have undertaken an extensive programme of talks to community groups in an attempt to increase public awareness about stuttering. During the 60 minutes presentation, I touch (inter alia) upon avoidance and recite my poem “Changing the words around”. The feedback that I receive confirms that avoidance plays a part in the lives of many people, not just those who stutter. Members of the audience frequently confide that my story encourages/inspires them to face up to their own fears. I find that so satisfying. Dale, I am delighted that our earlier online exchanges were of value. Let’s ensure that we don’t allow a further 10 years to pass before we next communicate. :-) Kindest regards Alan
