On internet one finds many threads not only in conversation but also in thinking and, yes, ideology. One also encounters a lot of "paths out of the thicket of stuttering" as Woody Starkweather wrote. To me all of these paths lead go through desensitization--as you implied. Desensitization changes the self-talk, the belief, that I have to talk perfectly and that I must be approved by everyone. Then there is also the belief that I cannot stand the discomfort that talking to others may evoke in me.
