I'm not sure when I started to think of stuttering as a disability. My stuttering has never been very severe for me, so it wasn't as "disabling" as it is for others. But I recall when I started working in the disability field about 8 years ago, I started seeing similarities in the experiences of people with disabilities. And I realized that, as people who stutter, we have been asking to be treated the same way as other people with disabilities have been asking for - rights, patience, understanding - and I realized that, even though it was a mild disability for me, I did have one.
