Beth and Nina, thank you so much for this article. Your conversational format helped to highlight several aspects of this important topic. I previously thought that whether or not stuttering was a disability depended solely on the person who stutters’ attitudes about stuttering. My view had now changed; while I agree with Beth that the degree that a person’s stutter affects her/his life functioning is what makes it a disability, I have also come to realize that it is mainly other people’s attitudes toward my speech are what makes stuttering a disability. I am glad that you have highlighted this point. I also like what you said about disability and pride, and the importance of self-acceptance. Great job!
