This conversation brought up some wonderful points about stuttering and the label of a disability. I think you said it really well. Making accommodations for individuals with disabilities is to “level out the playing field” and not an act of pity. Before beginning an SLP graduate program, I had very little exposure to stuttering. After my coursework, however, I fully understand that stuttering is a disability for which people should be able to receive accommodations. These accommodations can help people lead very successful lives. By witnessing the achievements of individuals who stutter, many other individuals with disabilities can be inspired and realize they too can have success. Thank you for this insightful article.
